It is with great sadness to report that Jeffrey V. Cooper, Certified Gas Welder in Cortland, has died. Jeff had been a gas pipeline welder for many years before starting with NYSEG at the Ithaca office in 2001. He easily went through the gas progression program and became a certified welder in 2003 and transferred to the Cortland office. He was one of our best welders and an excellent gas fitter. He often mentored other welder trainees so that they could be the best at their craft.
Jeff is survived by his wife Tracy and two sons, Tristin and Dylan. The family will receive friends Friday evening at the Zirbel Funeral Home in Groton, NY from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A memorial service will be held on Sunday in Cattaraugus, NY. Jeffrey V. Cooper, 42, of Chipman Corners Road, Groton, NY died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 6, 2013. Born October 4, 1970 in Peoria, Illinois, he was the son of R. Eugene Cooper and Wendy Rupp Barnhart. Growing up in the Cattaraugus, NY area, he was a 1990 graduate from Cattaraugus High School. Moving his family to Groton in 2002, he became involved in the community with being a huge supporter of the Groton Football team. He loved sports of all kinds, he coached Groton Youth baseball and football as well as he was an avid Vikings fan and Buffalo Sabres fan. His passion was his boys and he especially enjoyed watching them play football, baseball and Hockey. He was employed with NYSEG. He is survived by his wife , Tracy Berg Cooper, sons, Tristin and Dylan Cooper , all of Groton, his mother, Wendy (James) Barnhart, father, R. Eugene (Jeanetta) Cooper , sisters, Shannon Barnhart, Jenny Cooper and brother, Jerry Cooper. His one niece and his mother- in- law, Kathryn (Jake) Jacobs, father -in-law, Carlton (Sandi) Berg and his brothers-in-law, Tim Berg and Don Burke.
A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Cattaraugus, NY. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, January 11, 6:00-8;00 at the Zirbel Funeral Home 115 Williams St., Groton.
